Manchester United fans joke Jose Mourinho is at the Etihad to scout Wayne Rooney against Manchester City

Jose Mourinho was spotted in attendance at the Etihad as Manchester City drew 1-1 with Everton on Monday night.

The Special One was seen in the moments leading up to kick-off and watched on as United’s bitter rivals looked for a second victory in their opening two matches of the Premier League campaign.

But it was Wayne Rooney who opened the scoring in the 35th minute, just weeks after completing a move away from Old Trafford following 13 years with the Red Devils.

United have flown out of the blocks in the league this season, with consecutive 4-0 wins over West Ham and Swansea, and Rooney’s emotional farewell had almost been forgotten by supporters.

Rooney has impressed since rejoining Everton on a free transfer back in July and and scored the only goal of the game on his second league debut for the Toffees in a 1-0 defeat of Stoke last weekend.

A number of fans thought it strange that Mourinho would chose to watch Everton’s trip to the Etihad – especially when Luke Shaw and Ashley Young were making their long-awaited returns for the United’s Under-23 side down the road.

Mourinho forgets that Swansea is in Wales, not England

However, many joked the Portuguese was at the stadium to keep an eye on goalscorer Rooney.

Rooney looked to be the match-winner until Raheem Sterling popped up with an equaliser in the 82nd minute and the points were shared.

Here’s how they reacted to Mourinho’s sighting at the Etihad…

Manchester United Confirm Ricky Sbragia Has Returned to Old Trafford as New Under-23's Manager

Manchester United fans were teased by their club last night after the Red Devils announced a deal to bring Ricky Sbragia back to the club, over 10 years after he took charge of the United reserve sides between 2002 and 2005.

Many United fans have been on the edge of their seat over the last few days since news broke that the club had agreed a £75m deal to sign Everton striker Romelu Lukaku, but they're being forced to wait even longer until Lukaku is unveiled at Old Trafford.

Sbragia has had spells with Bolton Wanderers, Sunderland and the Scottish FA since leaving United in 2005. Nicky Butt, the head of coaching at Manchester United's academy, said: "Ricky brings a wealth of experience at all levels of football coaching. He has a great track record of developing young talent and is, of course, no stranger to Manchester United.

"Ricky's knowledge and experience will help continue our important and key tradition of blooding young players into the first team. I am delighted Ricky has returned to the club in this important role as we look to continue our development of the Academy."

Some fans were less than impressed with the announcement as they had hoped that the club were confirming Lukaku as a new signing.

Talking about his return to Manchester United, Sbragia said: "I couldn't be happier to be back at Manchester United. It’s an exciting time for the club, with a new structure for the Academy and a relatively new set of coaches and management team.

"I am really excited by the challenge of this role, the club has always been at the forefront when it comes to Academy football and I am delighted that the club continues to strive to be the best with its forward-thinking ideas for the future of youth football."

Manchester United have been given the green light to make a move for Gareth Bale after Real Madrid admitted that they would be willing to sell the 27-year-old, according to reports in France.

L’Equipe claims that Zinedine Zidane and Madrid president Florentino Perez met with Kylian Mbappe last week in order to persuade the Monaco forward to move to the Spanish capital this summer.

During their conversation, Zidane and Perez reportedly told Mbappe that they would be willing to offload one of Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo or Karim Benzema in order to guarantee him more playing time next season.

L’Equipe claim that out of those three players, Bale’s transfer would be the most likely and United could now follow up with a bid, given their long-standing interest in the Wales international.

L’Equipe claim that Zidane met with Mbappe last week.

Earlier this month, reports claimed that Bale was open to the idea of joining United but Madrid would command a £100 million transfer fee.

United have held talks with over a deal for Bale, although Madrid’s hierarchy are reportedly split over their decision to sell the forward they signed from Tottenham for £86m four years ago.

Ronaldo, meanwhile, is due to meet with Perez after Portugal's Confederations Cup campaign to discuss his own future at the Santiago Bernabeu.
